How Heat can Help You!

For the past few days I've woken up with a tight left shoulder.  It's most definitely caused by the way I slept, but the shoveling from yesterday's blizzard did not help much.  As I sat at the computer last night updating my business website, I took several "intermissions" to rub out the huge knot in my left upper Trapezius muscles as best as I could.  Trust me, even as a massage therapist it is so much easier having someone else do the work than doing it yourself!

After many moments of whimpering from the discomfort, I decided to heat up an herbal heat pack.  Heat packs are great; they're versatile.  You can leave them in the refrigerator or freezer and plop them into the microwave for a few minutes to get them warmed up.  That's exactly what I had to do last night.  After about 3 minutes I placed the pack onto my left shoulder and continued to sit at the dining room table.  Instantly I felt more relaxed.  I let it sit there for about 15 minutes while I did absolutely nothing, and by absolutely nothing I mean I searched through FaceBook to take a break from my website.  After it cooled down, I put it right back into the microwave for a minute and allowed it to heat back up again.  I needed a second round of this.  When I decided I had enough, I heated it back up and gave it to my Mom.  Her neck was bothering her.

Heat is a wonderful thing.  It expands, it relaxes, and when it comes to the body it allows fresh blood flow to the areas needed.  From a massage therapist's standpoint: Heat opens the muscles and relaxes the joints, which helps me to penetrate the tissue more easily and leaves you (the client) less sore from the deep work.  Plus, it makes for a great additive to the massage session . . . especially during the winter season.  Heated tables and Hot Stone Massage, anyone?

Just something to think about this winter ;-)

Working with Krishna for the Week

When I attended the Angel Messenger workshop to develop my intuitive reading skills, we had to work with an ascended master or angel each week.  I prayed to them.  I meditated with them.  I asked them for signs throughout the week; just to see how they would help me.  And each week and spiritual being were different.  No two were the same.  The workshop was 10 weeks long.  So, it's no surprise that during that time I got to know many ascended masters and spiritual beings and the many ways they are able to help those who ask.

That was four years ago.  To this day I still talk to many of them, though I have been hankering for a full week of working with each one, respectively.  So yesterday I decided to start just that.  I sat down on the floor and thumbed through Doreen Virtue's Archangels & Ascended Masters book to pick the "lucky one."  My thumb landed on Krishna.

Krishna is known as The Divine One.  He is considered the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, one of the gods who create, protect, and oversee the life cycles on Earth.  He is a deliverer of joy and happiness.  He helps with finding blessings, purifying and spiritualizing food, gardening, crops and flowers, joy, relationships, romantic love, spiritual awakening, and vegetarianism.

According to Doreen Virtue, one of the best ways to invoke Krishna: he "loves to connect with people through the offering of, and blessing of, food.  Prior to eating something, look at the food and mentally call upon Krishna.  Tell him that the food is your offering to him.  As he accepts your gift, he will bless and purify the food with his highly spiritualized energy.  Thank him, and then completely ingest his blessings by eating the food slowly, enjoying each bite completely.  Have a mental conversation with him while you're eating this food.  You'll notice that the experience is like being with a very wise dining companion who offer you stellar wisdom and sage advice."

I am excited to see how Krishna helps me this week.  I've already noticed a difference when eating meals, and it's only been a couple of days.  The food tastes better; I find it much more enjoyable.  I look forward to seeing how he helps me for the remainder of this week.  If you're interested in working with him, meditate to him.  Pray to him.  And then watch how your life changes. :)

How Massage Can Help Headaches & Migraines

     Let's start with what is.

By definition, a headache is a continuous pain in the head.  And a migraine is a recurrent throbbing headache that typically affects one side of the head and is often accompanied by nausea and disturbed vision.
Massage therapy is defined as manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person's health and well-being. There are dozens of types of massage therapy methods (also called modalities).

So how does massage help relieve headaches and migraines?

Massage promotes circulation.  It can increase blood flow in areas that might be ischemic (lacking blood flow) and therefore help relieve pain.
Massage decreases pain from trigger points.  Trigger Points are areas of hyper-irritable tissue that are very tender and also can refer pain to other areas of the body. Trigger Point Therapy or Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) can help decrease the pain and referrals into the neck and head.
Massage relieves muscle spasms and tension.  It can help loosen chronically tight muscles and taught bands of tissue. This helps with muscle balance and neck alignment. Also, loosening the muscles that attach to the base of the skull (suboccipitals) can relieve the tension headaches that travel up the back of the head and into the eye and the ‘vice-like’ constricting headaches so many people suffer from.
Massage helps regulate certain hormones.  It has shown to decrease levels of the stress hormone Cortisol. Massage therapy also increases endorphins and stimulates the Para-Sympathetic Nervous system, therefore promoting relaxation. Because of this hormone effect, massage therapy can improve the quality of your sleep. Think of it as a happy little cycle: decrease stress = better sleep = fewer headaches = decrease stress =……and so on.
Massage is a non-pharmacological treatment for headaches and migraines.  It is safe and effective, often getting to the root of the problem than just covering it up.  There are, of course, many potential causes of headaches and migraines, some being more serious than others.  If the reason for said head pain is quite severe, please check with your doctor first before getting a massage.  And be sure to always tell your massage therapist what is going on! We need to be informed so that we can employ the best protocol for your treatment. :)

Writing is Healing, even during a Mental Block.

I love to write.  I don't do it enough.  And I don't mean the type of writing you see on FaceBook or Twitter, or even in an email newsletter for work.  I mean the type of writing that makes you think, that makes you question, that helps to inspire the uninspired.  That's the type of writing I'm talking about.  And sometimes it's hard to do.  Sometimes inspiration is just out of reach.  Sometimes you need to write and get thoughts down until inspiration comes along.  And that is exactly what I'm doing right now.  I am writing until that 'Hallelujah' moment lights up my brain.  I am writing what I know.

Writing is very healing.  Writing is a way to communicate with others a message.  Said message can be of hope, despair, similarities and coincidences of situations that need clarity.  It is also quite informative.  It's a way to connect with others, on the physical plane and the not-so-physical plane.  The Universe hears you everytime you have a thought.  And if you put that thought down on paper (or even in a blog!), manifestation of said thought happens rather quickly.  So, what are my thoughts?

I want my business to grow.  No, instead I am going to think and write: My business is growing.  Because, it is.  Do you know it took me years; I mean, YEARS to believe that I am great at what I do? I've had so many clients tell me that I have "magic hands." My way, or technique, of massage puts them into a state of bliss and they happily, and drowsily, mumble something about my having magic hands as they walk out of the massage room.  I have been massaging for almost 10 years now, and it has taken me just as long to believe it.  Crazy, right? Why do people take a long time to believe the good stuff? We are so quick to believe the negative.  It's sad, really.  And something I have mindfully stopped doing the past couple of months.  I'm tired of making myself believe that I'm not good enough, or not deserving or not worthy of receiving all that I want and need.  Why can't I have it all? Honestly, why not? No one says I can't. There isn't a rule in some made up rulebook with regulations that prohibits my wants and desires.  And the same goes for you.

Did you read that? I will repeat it: THE SAME GOES FOR YOU!

People really need to start believing in themselves.  They need to remove the Ego and start living their lives like they're already happy, abundant, wealthy, healthy, in love, etc. because that starts happening once you start doing so.  My life has changed in amazing ways since the end of December.  Of 2014. That's not even that long ago.  There is this shift, and it's not even within myself (energetically, cosmically).  Yes, a lot of it is within myself.  But don't you have to be the change that you want to see in the world? I changed.  I am changing.  I have made myself believe I am healthy, abundant, wealthy beyond measure, happy, eccentric, loving, carefree, relaxed, and any other positive affirmation I can think of.  Why? Because I am.  It's as simple as that, really.  Think it until you believe it!

Through my mental block of words, I hope I was able to get through to you.  I hope I have inspired you in some way, shape, or form.  I hope you are able to take something away from this.  If my life has already changed for the better in a short amount of time, what makes you think yours can't? It's all about perspective, people.  Maybe it's time you change yours.
